A Blessing to Be a Blessing

Blessing Day September 11, 2010 Saturday was our first Blessing Day of the season and what a great blessing it was.  Volunteers from Tomahawk Baptist Church, Walnut Grove Baptist Church, New Bethesda Baptist Church, Sandston Baptist Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church came to Embrace Richmond to serve and ended up being blessed themselves.  After a time of getting to know each other and getting to know Embrace, volunteers were sent to Hillside Court or Fairfield Court to begin the service projects that were planned by Embrace leadership teams in each community.  Hillside collected food from the volunteers, who then bagged that food and took it to seniors in the community.  Fairfield volunteers participated in a service focusing on dealing with grief after loss.  After the service, those who participated released balloons representing hope, peace and community. Some volunteers were able to stay at Embrace and head over to the CARITAS Furniture Bank to help Hillside community member John pick out furniture for his new home in Hillside.  The CARITAS movers took the furniture over and volunteers loaded up John’s house with a new living room and kitchen set. One of the most important parts of Blessing Day is praying over the House Blessing.  John was incredibly overwhelmed by the generosity and compassion shown to him.  Before Saturday, John did not have a couch to sit on in his living room and now his apartment can begin to feel like a home.  He thanked everyone who came to help profusely as he tried to hold back tears.  Volunteers prayed for John and prayed for the seniors that were visited.  Then it...
